Dredd Scott Case
1857. Slave claimed freedom in 1846 after owner's death. Ruled free by a Missouri state court (1850) but ruled against by Missouri Supreme Court (1852). Supreme Court declared blacks not citizens in 1857, preventing freedom. Owners freed him anyway.
