Oswalds supporting evidence - Sharpio et al
Found that runners in a marathon slept for about 90mins more than usual on the two nights after the race.
NREM sleep increased from 25%-45%.
4 of 9
Oswald non supporting evidence - Horne
Reported than sleep deprivation did not interfere with participants ability to play sport. So not essential for physical functioning in the short term.

Sleep deprivation in animals - Rechtschaffen
Forced rats to stay away. After 33 days they all died.

Dement and Kleitman
(Aim + Hypothesis)

the pattern of eye movement and the context of the dream

Dement and Kleitman
(Method)
7 male 2 female participants went for
polysomnography. Told to avoid alcohol and caffeine during the day. Woken up
several times by researchers and were asked if they were dreaming, what they were dreaming about and how long it lasted.
8 of 9
Dement and Kleitman
(Findings)
Participants were more likely to report dreaming during REM sleep (80% compared to 9%)
Reported shorter dreams if woken up after 5mins compared to 15mins.
Did appear to have a link - left to right movement was dreaming about throwing tomatoes.
