Dressing themselves, brushing their teeth, nursery-socialisation, school, knowing what they do and don't like, hobbies

Friends, can organise their own time, friends can influence opinions but these may be different to other friends and family, driving

How is independence gained when starting employment?
16-18 years, managing budget and savings, adapting from school to work, mix with older people and learn from their experiences, small income- afford to travel without parents which reinforces socialisation

How is independence gained when leaving home?
Sacrifices- lower standard of living, housework, paying bills, juggle running a house, working and learning, distant from relatives-little help

How is independence gained when starting a family?
Own family- separate from parents, children rely on you, having to put children before yourself, less time for yourself, lose financial independence- give up work and reliant on partner

Fixed income- financial freedom, reach the peak of their career.

How is independence gained in later adulthood?
Know their abilities, care home they will have support, people remain active in their 80s and 90s, have time to develop IT skills so they can use social media and keep in touch with distant relatives, mobility and sensory aids available

Realistic manners, pragmatic approach, expert knowledge from experience, abstract thinking and independent
