What is an opportunity sample?
A sample of pps who are most easily available E.G. On the street.

Advantages of opportunity sampling.
Less time consuming; cost effective; easy method; large sample sizes.

Disadvantages of opportunity sampling.
Biased sample as it is only drawn from a small number of target population; ethical issues regarding consent and right to withdraw.

What is a volunteer sample?
Participants put themselves forwards due to seeing an advertisement in a newspaper, etc.

Advantages of volunteer samples.
Variety of pps; sample more representative; locates a niche group of pps.

Disadvantages of volunteer samples.
Volunteer bias (more motivated and cooperative); only those who see the advertisement have a chance of being selected (reduced sample size).

What is a random sample?
Pps nmes are drawn from a hat or selected on a computer; everyone has an equal chance.

Advantages of random sampling.
Unbiased; greater population validity.

Disadvantages of random sampling.
Not everyone you select will be willing to participate; representativeness not guaranteed; biased if too small.

What is a stratefied sample?
Groups of pps are selected based on their frequency in the population to get a representative sample.

What is a systematic sample?
Obtaining a representative sample by selecting every 5th or 10th person.

What is a pilot study?
A trial run of a study to test if certain things dont work.

Why should you do a pilot study?
Participants may not understand instructions; may guess what the study is about; may get bored due to too many tasks/questions; improvements can be made before spending time/money.
