P.I. Self Report

?
Identify two general strengths and two weakenesses of self reports
Strengths: 1. Ease of analysis e.g. closed questions 2. Collect a large amount of data. Weaknesses: 1.Social desirability bias/dishonesty 2. Low response rate
1 of 19
Describe a strength and a weakness of rating scales
Strength: Easily comparable whilst retaining control. Weakness: No reason as to why they put their answer
2 of 19
Describe a strength and weakness of open questions
Strength: No restriction with answer-detailed and rich data. Weakness: Difficult to compare and analyse data
3 of 19
Describe a strength and weakness of closed questions
Strength: Easy to compare and analyse data. Weakness: May miss out on data because it falls outside the allowed responses
4 of 19
Know what is meant by reliability
Repeat and get the same/similar results-consistency
5 of 19
Know how to test a self-report for reliability
Split-half/Test Re-test (same test again at a later date)
6 of 19
Know what is meant by validity
If it measures what it claims/sets out to measure
7 of 19
Know how to test a self- report for validity
Do a pilot test to check wording-ensuring its clear. Also, make sure the rating scales are efficient enough to capture people's responses
8 of 19
Describe opportunity sampling
Selecting those subjects that are around and available at the time
9 of 19
Identify two strengths and two weaknesses of opportunity sampling
Strengths:Quick/convienient and most economical sampling. Weaknesses: Often biased on the part of the researcher and very unrepresentative (likely to come across the same type of people)
10 of 19
Desrcribe random sampling
Random sampling only occurs when every member of a target population has an equal chance of being selected
11 of 19
Identify two strengths and two weaknesses of random sampling
Strengths: Often in large numbers and provides the best chance of an unbiased representative sample of a target population. Weaknesses: The larger the population, the more difficult it is to sample randomly and becomes more impractial
12 of 19
Describe self-selected sampling
Consists of those individuals who have conciously or unconciously determined their own involvement in a study. Eg Volunteers for studies/passers by for field studies
13 of 19
Identify two strengths and two weaknesses of self-selected sampling
Strengths:1. Relatively convenient, and if made on the basis of informed consent, ethical. 2.The choice is not biased by the researcher. Weaknesses: 1. Often unrepresentative 2. Volunteers are unlike non-volunteers in many ways.
14 of 19
Describe what is meant by quantitative data
Data that focuses on numbers and frequencies are known as quantitative data.
15 of 19
Outline one strength and one weakness of collecting quantitative data using self-report techniques
Strength:provides information that is easy to analyse statistically and is fairly reliable. Weakness: Criticised for not providing an in depth description.
16 of 19
Describe what is meant by qualitative data
Data that describes meaning and experiences are known as qualitative data
17 of 19
Outline one strength and one weakness of collecting qualitative data using self-report techniques
Strength: Often high in validity. Provide a more in depth and rich description. Weakness: Not that reliable
18 of 19
Describe three ethical issues relating to self report techniques
1. distress 2. personal questions (e.g.issues in health) 3. Right to withdraw
