1887- Pretended to be insane to get into an asylum- Declared insane by several doctors "a Hopeless case"- Recorded everything in a journal, published as "10 days in a mad house"- as a result, more funding given to asylums

Suggested patients like schizophrenics should be treated in the community- believed the medical model was no better than demonology- said labeling people with "mental illness" was a way to exclude people from society

Part of Anti-psychiatry movement, he gave lectures about the problems with psychiatry- Rosenhan attented, and wanted to observe for himself from the "inside" what it was like to be labelled/stripped of their identity

Self-fulfilling prophicies and labelling. Teaches told that a "special" group of pupils had "unusual potential" and would "bloom" (actually had a range of IQs) Teahcers' expectations became a SFP, weaker students increased IQ's in 8 months
