?
What is an aim?
A general statement that describes the purpose of an investigation
1 of 12
What is a hypotheses?
A statement made at the start of an investigation, clearly stating a relationship between variables
2 of 12
What is a directional hypotheses?
A hypotheses where the anticipated outcome of the experiment is stated e.g. People who exercise are more fit
3 of 12
What is a non-directional hypotheses?
A hypotheses where a difference between the condition or groups of the experiment is stated but not in a particular direction e.g. People who exercise differ in fitness compared with people who don't
4 of 12
What is sampling?
A smaller group of a target population that an experiment is performed on
5 of 12
What is random sampling?
A method in which all members of a target population have an equal chance of being selected
6 of 12
What is systematic sample?
A method where every Nth member of a target pop. is selected
7 of 12
What is a stratified sample?
A method in which the composition of the sample reflects the target population
8 of 12
What is a stratified sample? (cont.)
E.g. If 100 people were the target pop. and 50% liked oranges, 40% liked apples and 10% liked pears and you took a sample of 20, you'd need 10 apple-likers, 8 orange-likers and 2 pear-likers
9 of 12
What is opportunity sampling?
A method in which those presently available are asked to participate e.g. asking people on the street for market research
10 of 12
What is volunteer sampling?
A method where participants select themselves to be a part of the experiment e.g. researcher places an ad in a newspaper
