In Ulster - This is an area in the North West which is rather remote from English influence

they didn’t do it on the hereditary principle – they did it by ‘emerging’ as the next heir. The word is ‘tanist’ meaning the heir, done through the permission of the community

Con O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone - Matthew was older but Shane had been chosen as Con's tanist

How does Shane react?
Shane murders Matthew and forces his father out of Tyrone, who dies shortly afterwards

Earl of Sussex declared he was a rebel and should not be allowed to take the title of the Earl of Tyrone. Thus Shane rebels

He attacks English settlers and makes his way towards Dublin and attacks the administration there

He paid peasants to fight for him. He hired 1500 Scottish mercenaries to fight with him. His tactics were very guerrilla in their style

How successful is Shane?
At first he does manage to gain control of most of Ulster

How does the Lord Deputy respond?
he marches through O’Neill’s land burning down property and killing livestock and people. 4,000 of the cattle owned by O’Neills were slaughtered. They have a couple of skirmishes where they’re in direct conflict. This goes on for quite a few years

1562 Shane is persuaded to visit London for an audience with Queen Elizabeth

Why is she particularly concerned?
her intelligence network had found out that he was trying to contact French military help and Charles VIIII – he even perhaps offered him the Crown of Ireland if he helped; he also approached Mary Queen of Scots

What happens when he comes to London?
She tried to murder him with a cask of poisoned wine, but failed. Instead she forgave him after he went through an elaborate forgiveness ceremony. She makes him Captain of Tyrone and restores him to the position of ‘The O’Neill’.

What happens when he returns to Ireland?
1563 he goes back and continues to cause trouble

Who replaces Sussex? When? What does he try to do?
1566 Earl of Sussex is replaced by Henry Sidney who takes over trying to deal with Shane O’Neill. However, he too fails to keep him under control

What happens to Shane?
1567 he is killed in a barfight with someone from the McDonnell over some livestock. His pickled head was sent to Dublin for the Queen to see

How does Elizabeth respond after his death?
She passes an act of attainder against the O’Neill family and abolishes the title of ‘The O’Neill’ with all their lands now in her possession which she then redistributes as plantations to English nobles and Anglo-Irish lords.

The period of 1572 to 1576 is called ‘The Plantation of Ulster’ – it fails miserably.
