?
Where is the erythrocytes formed and broken down? How long is the life span?
Formed in the bone marrow, broken down in the spleen. Life span 120 days

What are small RBCs called? and where would they be found?
Microcytic - found in people with iron deficiency anaemia
2 of 11
What are large RBCs called? and where would they be found?
Macrocytic - found in people with folate deficiency anaemia
3 of 11
What is the structure of Haemoglobin?
Each global has 1 attached haem group. Each haem group consists of a porphyrin ring that contains 1 atom of iron

Hb in most adults =
2 x alpha, 2 x beta
5 of 11
Hb in some adults =
2 x alpha, 2 x delta
6 of 11
Hb in foetuses =
2 x alpha, 2 x gamma
7 of 11
What happens in CO poisoning?
It preferentially binds to Hb
8 of 11
What happens in alpha thalassemia?
Excess beta chains causes unstable tetramers
9 of 11
What happens in beta thalassemia?
Excess alpha chains, do not form tetramers and high concentrations form toxic aggregates
10 of 11
What happens in sickle cell anaemia?
Change of glutamic acid to valine. The Hb formed polymerises at low pO2. RBCs deform. Causes schema and infarction
