What is leadership?
'Leadership is the ability to establish vision and direction, to influence and align others towards a common goal, and to empower and inspire people to achieve success.'

The mechanisms of getting things done, this involves planning, monitoring and controlling

Being positive with yourself will help to create a similar attitude within your team, which help them to achieve challenging goals

If you want to gain the trust of your team members and other stakeholders, you must respect differing views and opinions and always maintain your integrity

You need to influence stakeholders by presenting compelling arguments

Leadership qualities: Common sense
You need sensible solutions to satisfy the triple constraints of a project, the best technical solution may not be the best approach if you disregard the other project constraints.

You must be able to define and communicate the project goals in a way that encourages stakeholders and team members to follow your lead, especially important in early stages

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Physiological
Basic needs of food, water and sleep. Team members must have a desk, the tools they need, network access, washing /ablution facilities

Predictability and order (job security, personal safety) - Safe working environment, ensure seconded team members understand their reporting lines, provide assurance about appraisals, career development and progression opportunities

Herzberg Hygiene Factors - What are they?
The need to avoid unpleasantness and discomfort, these factors influence the degree of dissatisfaction of a worker without necessarily increasing their motivation e.g. company policy, direct supervision, personal-life, salary

Herzberg Motivators - What are they?
These factors cater for the higher-level needs of the team and should help to positively influence their behaviour, often related to the need for personal development e.g. achievement, recognition, increased responsibility and career advancement.

What is Theory X (McGregor)?
Perception that managers hold on their employees (not the way they generally behave) - management assumes employees are inherently lazy, will avoid work if they can, and that they inherently dislike work

What is Theory Y (McGregor)?
Perception that managers hold on their employees (not the way they generally behave) - management assumes employees may be ambitious and self-motivated, exercise self-control and enjoy their mental and physical work duties
