What does a neuron do?
Senses changes in the environment and communicates the changes to other neurons and commands the body's responses to the sensations.
1 of 16
What are glial cells?
A type of insulating/supporting/nourishing cell for neurons.
2 of 16
What is the difference between a dendrite and an axon?
Axon carrys impulses away from the cell body and a dendrite carrys impulses to the cell body and dendrites often have small spines on the surface.
3 of 16
What are collaterals?
Axon branches
4 of 16
What are the different types of neuron?
Projection, Sensory, Motor, Inter
5 of 16
What are the different types of glia?
Astrocyte, Microglia, Radial glia, Obligodendroglia
6 of 16
What are axon sheaths made from?
Schwaan cells which creates a myelin sheath which increases the rate of impulse transduction
7 of 16
What does Afferent mean?
Moving towards the brain
8 of 16
What does Efferent mean?
Moving away from the brain
9 of 16
What are the three parts of an axon?
Axon hillock, axon proper and axon terminal bouton
10 of 16
How are neurons classified?
By the number of neurites they have-unipolar,bipolar,multipolar
11 of 16
What is a Golgi Type 1 neuron?
A neuron with a long axon
12 of 16
What is a Golgi Type 2 neuron?
A neuron with a short axon
13 of 16
What is the resting membrane potential?
The difference in the electircal charge between the negatively charged cytosol on the inside surface of the membrane and the electrical charge on the outside.
14 of 16
What is an action potential?
A brief reversal of the resting potential, so the inside of the membrane becomes positively charged.
15 of 16
What is the neuronal membrane made of?
A sheet of phospholipids, 2 molecules thick forming a bilayer, isolating the cytosol from the extracellular fluid
