What do alpha motor neurons do?
They directly trigger the generation of force by muscles and use acetylcholine as the neurotransmitter
1 of 11
What is a motor unit?
The aloha motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it innervates.
2 of 11
What is a motor neuron pool?
A collection of alpha motor neurons that innervate a single muscle.
3 of 11
What are the three main inputs into an alpha motor neuron?
Spinal interneurons, sensory input from muscle spindles, input from upper motor neurons in the brain
4 of 11
How are fast motor units recognised?
These are the rapidly fatiguing white fibers.
5 of 11
How are slow motor units recognised?
Theses are the slowly fatiguing red fibers.
6 of 11
What is the structure of a muscle fiber?
Made of myosin and actin filaments forming the sarcomere and myofibrils.
7 of 11
What do mechanosensitive axons respond to?
Changes in angle, direction and velocity of movement in a joint.
8 of 11
What is reciprocal inhibition?
It is the contraction of one set of muscles accompanied by the relaxtion of antagonist muscles.
9 of 11
What is excitatory input?
The flexor reflex is withdrawing limb from aversive stimulus
10 of 11
What is the central pattern generators?
Are the circuits giving rise to rhythmic motor activity
