January 30th 1933
Hitler is Appointed Chancellor

February 27th 1933
The Reichstag Fire. Communist Marinus Van der Lubbe is found near the scene with a box of matches. The Nazis blame him for the disaster and use this to exploit the danger of the communist threat.

February 28th 1933
Emergency Decrees. These were issued by President Hindenburg using Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution. They suspend Constitutional Civil Rights and are used to repress the KPD. This is used as the basic law of the Third Reich.

March 5th 1933
New Elections are held. The Government uses control of the media and Police along with unofficial pressure to intimidate opponents. Surprisingly, the Nazis only gain 44% of the vote with 88.8% of voters turning up at the ballot box.

March 13th 1933
New Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. headed by Dr. Josef Goebbells, it is used to control all media

March 24th 1933
The Enabling Act is passed. This grants the Government emergency powers for the next 4 years. SA & ** Officers patrol outside to intimdate opponents & prevent entry to the building. Passed by 441 votes to 94.

1 Day Boycott of Jewish Businesses

April 7th 1933
Law for the Restoration of Professional Civil Service is passed. Public sector "purged" of "Alien elements" e.g Jews, political opponents. only 5% are removed at this stage.

May 1st 1933
International Labour Day is turned into "International Day of Labour". 2 Trade union offices are seized and placed under the control of the new German Labour Front

June 1933
The Passing of the Employment Law. Major program of public works is implemented. This includes road-building etc. Designed to lower unemployment

July 14th 1933
The Law against the formation of new political parties is passed.

July 20th 1933
THe Concordat Agreement between the state and the Vatican takes place. The Church is banned from political activity and the state must protect religious freedom.

October 14th 1933
The Reichstag is dissolved.

November 12th 1933
Nazi list of Candidates for the Reichstag win 92% of the votes. This is because there is no other party to vote for and some voters have not bothered to vote.

Law for the reconstruction of the state is passed.

Night of the Long Knives

August 2nd 1934
President Hindenburg dies. Hitler Declares himself Führer and has the army declare an oath of loyalty to him rather than to the state.
