It promised to help any country that felt threatened by "Outside pressure" (meaning communism). The USSR sees this as a decleration of war.

The plan was desinged to stop poverty and therefore stop communism from spreading. Stalin is very angry and calls it "dollar imperialisation"- bribing countries for support.

In 1957 the USSR used a rocket to put a satallite in space. The first ever satallite was called Sputnik 1. It could also carry nuclear weapons a huge disdtance.

America developed its own long range missiles in 1957. This made the Cold War worse because both could launch unstoppable missiles if a war started.
