What was the political system in 1851?
-only men with property and land rights could vote
-mps were not paid
-the house of lords had to agree to the laws that were passed by the house of commons

-they could resign at any point hence why there could be a change of pm without there being a election
-most pms would come from the house of lords

when more than one party came together because the party didn't have enough seats by themselves.

-The liberal reform bill and this gave middle class the vote
-the second reform act 1/3 of the working class had the vote
third reform act 2/3 of the working class had the vote

Tories,Whigs,radicals to conservatives and liberals.

what were the conservitives/tories attitude?
they didnt like change they wanted to keep things the same.
-more right wing
-church and landowners/upper class support

-slightly right wing but not as much as the cons
-willing to accept change
- had the support of the middle class

-people who agree and are against the corn laws
-disagree and wanted to keep the corn laws

1815-1846

what were the corn laws?
Kept the corn prices at a high level and it states that no foreign corn could enter Britain until the domestic corn reached the price of 80 shillings per quarter and this was to stop cheap imports of grain.

free trade and this meant no restrictions on trade so they were against the corn laws.

-textiles which was cotton wool 2/3 of britains exports.
-iron and steel demands for iron were increasing,
-ship building in the 1858 they built the great eastern.
-railways prosperous development of towns such as derby and donecaster.

-Britain became known as the "commercial centre of the world"
-trusted eg, the bank charter 1844 regulate banking
- trade w the empire: suez canal was built allowed faster trade with east india
-produced goods others couldn't leading to an export boom e

what was the agriculture like in the 1850s/60s?
-artificial fertilizers called guano which was bird poo and this was an industry worth 8 million a tear
-high yields good weather

- many farmers moved to live stock and arable farming high profits

-disraeli believed in the policy free trade and didnt protect agriculture.
-goverment believe in lassiez faire and germany had trade union.

-weather turned from good to poor
-advanced machinary like the combine harvester and threshing
- needed to adapt and change
-needed tarrifs on imported food stuff
-free trade policy did not protect aggriculture

-growths continues but at a slow rate
-Britain fell behind on the latest technology as the machinery was either old or obsolete.
