Extraneous Variable
Any variable other than the IV that could effect the DV if not controlled. They don't vary systematically with the IV.

Confounding Variable
Any variable other than the IV that may have affected the DV, so changes to the DV can't be traced back to a 'true source.' CVs vary systematically with the IV.

Demand Characteristics
Cues from the researcher or researcgh situation that could be interpreted by the participants as revealing the purpose of the investigation. This can lead to participants changing their behaviour.

Investigator effects
Effects of the investigators behaviour on the DV. This can include things like study design and selection of and interaction with participants.

Randomisation
The use of chance to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of conditions.

Standardisation
Using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants.
