what is classification?
classification is when living organisms are put into groups because of their characteristics & features
1 of 17
what is a species?
species is a group of organisms that can breed with each other & produce fertile offspring
2 of 17
what is variation?
variation is the differences between living organisms
3 of 17
give two examples of variation
continuous variation & discontinuous variation
4 of 17
what is evolution?
evolution is when the enviroment changes natural selection will take place in the characteristics of a species changing gradually from generation to generation
5 of 17
what are the 5 kingdoms?
animalia, plantae, fungi, prokaryotae & protoctista
6 of 17
what is vertebrates & invertebrates
vertebrates are living organims with a backbone & invertebrates are animals without a backbone
7 of 17
what is natural selection?
individuals of a species show variation, this can suggest that some individuals will be better able to survive in their enviroment & produce more healthier offspring than others
8 of 17
what is offspring?
offspring is the scientific name for babies
9 of 17
what is genes?
a short piece of Dna at a particular point on a chorosome, a gene codes for characteristic
10 of 17
what is a allele?
when a gene comes in different forms
11 of 17
what is phenotype?
the characteristics will show at least one copy is present in the chorosone
12 of 17
what does a genotype show?
the alleles in a individual
13 of 17
what is a dominant allele? & what is the effect of it?
an allele that produces the same phenotype whether its paired allele is identical or different & its effects are it shows at least one present in the genotype
14 of 17
what is a recessive allele? what is the effect of it?
a recessive allele is an allele that produces its characteristic phenotype only when its paired allele is identical. & the effects are it shows at least two copies in the genotype
15 of 17
what is monohybrid inheritence?
a characteristic is controlled by a single gene
16 of 17
what are genetic disorders?
when some genes have faulty allels that cause health problems
