what is an enzyme?
a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
1 of 5
what are catalysts?
catalysts are substances that increase the rate of chemical reactions without being used up.
2 of 5
what is the active site?
Enzymes have active sites that substrate molecules (the substances involved in the chemical reaction) fit into when a reaction happens. The active site has to be the right shape for the substrate molecules to fit into.
3 of 5
what happens when an enzyme is denatured?
when an enzyme is denatured an enzyme is permanently damaged and cvannot be reversed
4 of 5
how does denaturing occur in enzymes?
Denaturing is an irreversible change – the enzyme is permanently damaged. Its function is inhibited and the enzyme no longer works. Denaturing can happen at high temperatures and at extreme pH values.
