what are phobias?
irrational fear of a specific object or situation

types of phobias
specific phobia: phobia of a specific object, eg arachnophobia= fear of spiders

social anxiety/phobia: fear of a social situation, eg public speaking

agoraphobia: fear of public or open spaces

emotional symptoms
- anxiety: difficult experience positive emotions, prevents relaxation, can be long term

- emotional responses are unreasonable: the emotional responses experienced are out of proportion to the actual danger posed

behavioural symptoms
- panic: may involve crying, screaming, or running away (or sometimes children respond differently by freezing or throwing a tantrum)

- avoidance: sufferer may avoid coming into contact w/ phobic stimulus, preventing them from going about everyday life

cognitive symptoms
- irrational beliefs: increases pressure on the sufferer to perform well in social situation

- cognitive distortions: perceptions of the phobic stimulus may be distorted

- selective attention to the phobic stimulus: can be really difficult for sufferer
