what is a behaviour change intervention?
a set of techniches used together, with aim to change the health behaviours of individuals, communities or whole population.
typically theory or evidence driven but not always

why is theory important?
helps identify what needs to change, helps see what did and didn't work, helps learn from other research

a theory driven approach or a participatory-experience driven

an intervention that successfully reduced GP visits for unnecessary reasons in the UK

this forms part of the behaviour change wheel
can help you figure out what technique is best for intervention

what are behaviour change techniques
these are the smallest component of BCI that on their own can bring about an element of change
taxonomy = reliable method for specifying active ingredients. there are 93 in general.

what are some disadvantages for the application of theory in a BCI?
no guidance on how to address a particular theoretical construct
so many possible behaviour change techniques, hard to choose
context is important, need to see what works for each person

what is the person based approach?
Yardley et al (2015)
optimising application of theory
this is a soton based approach that established a variety of different interventions for public health
uses interactive qualitative research which means they talk in depth to those who use intervent

why is a person based approach good?
helps to see which parts of behaviour are acceptable, avoids intrusive techniques, and encourages to think about new techniques

why are behavioural change interventions good during a pandemic?
injection rates could slower with good hygiene
this is particularly true as there is currently no vaccine
