Promotion: Social Cognition Theory

Advantages

  • Clear guidelines for putting the theories into practice: Hardeman et al 2005 causal modelling approach + Sutton's 2 additions of elaboration likelihood and guided mastery
  • Implementation and planning considers what to do when plans go wrong, providing comfort to individuals that they will remain in control
  • Increasing knowledge is useful when used  with other interventions

Disadvantages

  • People may not engage with the plan in private, it may interrupt existing plans and it ignores habit
  • Harden et al 2012 claimed most interventions describe which beliefs to change but not how
  • Sniehotta 2009 claimed the theories work as bottlenecks by assuming all behaviour change is mediated by intentions and so miss factors that aren't involved in intentions

Evaluation

The interventions are useful for targeting beliefs in a social context and is effective for changing intentions. However, it assumes behaviour is produced by specific decision-making processes independent of habit and fails to consider factors working outside of intentions
