what are health behaviours?
health behaviours are "any activity undertaken by a person who believes himself to be healthy for the purpose of preventing disease"
1 of 18
what did kashal and cobb (1966) suggest?
illness behaviour = seeking remedy
sick role behaviour = taking medication
2 of 18
what studies show the impact that health behaviours have?
Matarazzo (1984)
suggests behavioural pathogens impair health and behavioural immunomes are behaviours that protect health
3 of 18
what did the study conducted by the diabetes prevention programme research group do?
aimed to modify the risk factors for diabetes. they were randomised into groups, lifestyle intervention, medication and lifestyle advice or placebo and lifestyle advice
4 of 18
what were the results for the diabetes prevention programme?
group one had higher change in physical activity, and group 2 had small weight change. group one were the least likely to not get diabetes 4 years on
5 of 18
what are theoretical models?
they are a set of thoroughly tested and agreed upon conclusions which helps organise knowledge
6 of 18
who proposed the health belief model?
Rosendock (1966) and Becker (1974). it was developed to predict behaviour that protects against illness
7 of 18
what are the parts of the health belief model?
susceptibility = risk of disease
severity = how bad it would be
benefits = effectiveness
barriers = issues
self efficacy = overall motivation
internal triggers = cues to action
8 of 18
what is the evidence to support the health belief model?
Jones et al (2013)
18 interviews based on health belief model advice, 80% of the studies showed improvement, however most only used certain parts of the model
9 of 18
who proposed the theory of planned behaviour?
Ajzen and Madden (1986)
poses 3 core health behaviour beliefs that are hypothesised to predict a behavioural intention
10 of 18
what are the 3 parts of the theory of planned behaviour?
attitude = positive or negative beliefs about health behaviour
subjective norms = perceptions about others attitudes
perceived behavioural control = perception of internal and external barriers
11 of 18
what is the evidence to support the theory of planned behaviour?
Wade et al (2010)
widely used and helped to predict behaviour, screening for oral component, routine screening less common. behaviour was predicted by intention and internal behavioural control.
12 of 18
who proposed social cognitive theory
Bandura et al (2004)
13 of 18
what are the components of social cognitive theory?
self efficacy = ones belief that you have the ability to perform behaviour
outcome expectations = costs/benefits of situation
health goals = plans to achieve goals
socio-cultural factors = beliefs in what others think and do
14 of 18
what evidence is there for social cognitive theory?
Young et al (2014)
SCT was used to predict physical activity in 44 studies, 1/3 of behaviours can be explained by SCT. there was an inconsistent relationship between outcome expectation and socio-economic factors
15 of 18
what is the conceptual issues of evaluating health behaviour theories
Ogden (2019)
- overlap between theories, not really relevant
- assumes casual relationships
- reactivity = measuring beliefs to record or change them
16 of 18
what is the methodological issues evaluation of health behaviour theories?
Hankins et al (2000)
- evidence is largely cross-sectional
- over reliance on multiple regression
- sample size might be bad
- measuring = have to know what we are measuring
17 of 18
what is the predictive issues of evaluating health behaviour theories?
Sutton (1998)
- imprecision = models aren't very good at predicating behaviour
- other cognitions are needed to predict intention
- intention behaviour gap = may not actually follow through with behaviour
