Education has 2 roles/functions:

1) Creating social solidarity - a sense of belonging. Achieved through teaching shared norms & values e.g. history- teaches shared heritage. This creates value consensus (agreement on behaviour) & avoids anomie (normlessness) School= ‘mini society’ to prepare for work e.g. we learn to have instrumental relationships (based on mutual self-interest) rather than affectiverelationships (based on love, like in the family) through group work tasks, etc.
