The Filter Model- Kerchkoff and Davies

This method argues that relationships develop through 3 filters so that different factors that we look for in relationships are important at different times/ stages in a relationship.

 

The first filter is social/ demographic variables. This filter is used without us noticing it. This filter looks at those who live around us, work around us or who we go to college with. It eliminates those who are too far away and so only those we see often or near to us are included in this filter. A group of people who live in other places are rarely encountered.

 

The second filter is similarity of attitudes and values and involves filtering out potential ‘candidates’ based on how much you have in common.
