The condition of the church

Before reformation, Eng was Roman Catholic country.
There were critics about this- the educated elite. 
Humanists wanted to see the RCC retained, but improved with removeal of abuses.

Early days on HVIII's reign, humanists were optimistic that the 'proven abuses' in the Church would be addressed.
