American Soldiers

American troops, often known as GI's,began to arrive in Britain from 1942 onwards and they had a huge impact on people's lives.

  • The Americans were easygoing and were not class conscious like the British. They were better paid than British troops and were popular with girls.
  • In general, the GI's mixed in well in British society, but sometimes there was tension because of the cultural differences between the USA and Britain.
