- The Alliance System and the Arms Race
- Triple Alliance
- In 1882, Germany formed an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. It was known as The Triple Alliance
- Germany also had a treaty with Russia, but in 1890 - Willhelm let the treaty lapse
- Soon after, in 1894, Russia formed an alliance with France. Under this agreement, the two countries agreed to help each other if Germany attacked either of them
- Triple Entente
- In 1902, Britain signed a naval agreement with Japan
- In 1904, Britain signed the Entente Cordiale with France. The two agreed to remain on good terms and not to quarrel over colonies
- In 1907, Britain also reached a friendly agreement with Russia. The Entente Cordiale became the Triple Entente
- Why is The Alliance System seen as a cause of WW1
- As relations between rival powers worsened, each power would look for the support of its allies.
- The Great Powers were also involved in a race to build up their armies and navies, therefore the rival alliances grew militarily stronger
- The Build Up of Armies, 1900-1914
- All of the great powers, except Britain, increased the size of their armies during this period.
- In 1913, the French raised the Conscription period from Two years to Three years
- The Russians raised their conscription policy from Three to Three and a Half years
- By 1913, the German army was very powerful, only Russia had more soldiers
- Britain was the only country that had not introduced Conscription by 1914
- The Naval Arms Race, 1908-1914
- Since the British army was very small, it relied even more heavily on naval power.
- By the end of the 19th Century, Britain had the largest navy in the world
- In 1908, Kaiser Willhelm ordered Admiral Tirpitz to build up Germany's navy so it could rival Britain's
- The German navy became a real threat to Britain's in 1908, when both sides began to build Dreadnoughts
- The Naval Race reached a peak in 1909. The Naval Race did much to make the British resent and fear the Germans
- By 1914, Britain had owned 34 Dreadnought whilst Germany only had 22
