·        Managing government spending

In the 1980s, the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, wanted to reduce government spending on welfare benefits such as healthcare. She wanted to create a system that would make individuals more responsible for their own healthcare and welfare. This was because the British government was spending too much on welfare benefits. (Linking sentence) If healthcare treatment is not free, people will have to become more self-reliant and start saving to pay for their own medical expenses. This will means that the financial burden on the British government will
