Change in family size

Trend: In 1900, the average number of children per family was 5. In 2007, the average number of children per family was 2. 

Reasons: Equal opportunities for men & women. Women now have the opportunity to have a career and get a good education - more time devoted to career, less time for family. Widely available and affordable contraception plus the option of abortion is now legal.
