Respiration Notes

Enzyme-controlled reaction that makes energy = respiration

This happens in organelles in our cells called mitochondria. The number of mitochondria in a cell tells us how active that cell is, respiration happens continuously in all animal or plant cells. Muscles have a lot since they are continuously moving.

Aerobic respiration happens when there is oxygen reaching the cells.

Oxygen + Glucose ---> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy released

The waste produced is water and carbon dioxide which can be removed from the body safely, this reaction produces the maximum amount of energy from glucose provided.

Carbon dioxide and water can be exhaled or water can be excreted or sweated out.

Use of energy in plants

- active transport of uptake of minerals from soil

- growth

- translocation of sugars around plant

and animals:

- movement

- stay warm-blooded

- growth

- active transport of digesting minerals

The composition of inhaled and exhaled air is that exhaled air has more CO2, respiration produces this extra CO2.

With aerobic respiration in exercise, as the person becomes fitter their heart rate decreases and doesn’t need to beat as much as it can be stronger to pump more blood. Another effect of exercise on the body is that it forces the body to breathe in more oxygen.
