Memory and Recall
Performers need to recall techniques & skills and tactics & strategies
- Encoding- converting information into something simpler
- Storage- retaining information for a time period
- Retrieval- recovering the stored information
The multi-store memory model
Short term sensory store -> Short term memory -> Long term memory
Short term sensory store (STSS)
- SELECTIVE ATTENTION
- Info enters the brain as a stimulus
- Info is held for a very short period of time
- Irrelevant info is quickly replaced
- Very large capacity
Short term memory (STM)
- REHEARSAL
- Info is compared to what we've learnt before
- Info is held for slightly longer than STSS
- Important info is encoded into LTM
- Limited capacity
Long term memory (LTM)
- RETRIEVAL
- Holds info which has been rehearsed
- Info is held for a very long time
- Motor programmes are stored here
- Limitless capacity
e.g. Catching a ball in cricket:
STSS: Performer filters out anything other than the ball
STM: Performer compares this to previous experiences of catching a ball and asks LTM to retrieve the motor programme
LTM: Motor programme is retrieved and if…
