The study of language development, etymology and change over history. E.g, 'villein' meaning 'farmhand/unchivalrous' c.1400. Developed into 'villain' meaning 'antagonist/criminal' c.1800.

SYNCHRONIC
Refers to the study of language at a particular moment with no interest in how language came about
