‘The resurrection is historically unreliable.’

LOA - yes, the resurrection is historically unreliable in the 21st century

Argument - Bultmann: we cannot be expected to read the Bible without our modern day understanding of the world, we must approach Biblical understanding with 21st century eyes in order to demythologise events in the Bible. In order to be a Christian, all we need to believe is that Jesus lived, preached and died.

Counter - Wright: we must approach the Bible with 1st century eyes in order to understand the historical context. The resurrection is not just a historical event but a factual event. Suggests ‘the evidence for the resurrection outweighs the evidence that the resurrection did not happen’. Resurrection is a fluent theme in previous society (Greek mythology, Judeo thought).

Evaluation - more logical to follow Bultmann’s line of thinking. He agrees with basic facts of Christianity which cause no controversy. He is also more appealing in the modern era ‘in order to sustain faith’.
