ICD-10 (Classification system) Explanation and Evaluation

Classifies disorders based on different types of symptoms present. Uses coding system by breaking down disorders into digits and then decimal places to pinpoint which specific disorder within the category the induvidual is displaying.

Section F refers to mental and behavioural disordrs for a general diagnosis.- '5' refers to behavioural syndromes - 50 is eating disorders, Bulimia is F50.2

Codes are used worldwide to refer to disorders.

  • F20-29= Schizopherenia, Schizotypal and delusional disorders
  • F30-39= Mood disorders eg. depression
  • F40-49= Neurotic, stress related and somatoform disorders eg. genralised anxiety
  • F50-59= Behavioural Syndromes associacted with physicological disturbances and physical factors

Annex 1 covers disorders which are being reserached but have not yet been classified eg.
