- Section F of the ICD - specific for mental health disorders
- DSM
- Most used
- first created 1952 would have things listed on it as mental illness that would not be accepted/belived today eg. being gay
- CURRENT = DSM 5
- DSM 5 has removed the 5 AXES!!!
- Has CHANGED SCIZOPHERNIA SUBTYPES BY removing those that lack validity and reliability
- as our understanding of mental health evolves, both classification systems are updated over time - DSM IS NOW UPDATED AT REG. INTERVALS
- WE FOCUS MAINLY ON DSM
- EVALUATION OF CLASSIFICATION TYPES
- Allows common diagnosis to be given
- Manuals are OBJECTIVE in how they define a disorder, meaning the same diagnosis can be given universally
- By splitting disorders into list of symptoms makes classification reductionist
- Diagnosis can lead to labelling, could create SFP and societies negative treatment
- Not everyone believes in treatment, in particular those that follow a medical model
