  • Positive ions (cations ) attract the negative ions (anion) to build a giant ionic lattice
  • eg.  Sodium Chloride Na+Cl- (s)

Hydrated Crystals

  • Ionic solids include water
  • H2O is fitted into the lattice
  • So regular pattern of 3 molecules eg. Mg+, Cl- and H2O
  • Water = water of crystallisation
  • Crystals = hydrated crystals
  • Hydrated crystals are heated so water leaves as steam producing anhydrous soild

Ionic Substances in Solution

  • Dissolve
