1. Sometimes a short sentence works best and sometimes a long one does. Neither of them work well all of the time. It's best to use a variety of different lengths.
ALL LONG: I needed to catch a tarin which left at one o'clock and I checked my watch and I was late so I decided to run, but the streets were busy and I kept having to dodge people. Finally I crossed the road and got to the station where I saw the train hadn't left, so I looked at my watch again and it was fast.
ALL SHORT: I needed to catch a train. It left at one o'clock. I checked my watch. I was late…
