Day care refers to car for children under school age, generally at a nursery or by a childminder. The main options for day care are as follows:

  • Nursery based care: parents are currently entitled to free nursery places for all children aged three years and above. Nurseries are staffed by trained workers, may be attached to a primary school and often benefit from the use of school facilities. Nurseries are inspected by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) and are required to plan their activites.
  • Family based care:
    • Registered childminders: here, the child receives care in the childminder's house
