Crimean War: March 1854 to February 1856
A brief summary of causes of the Crimean War:
- Tension rises between Russia and Turkey over the "Holy Land"
- Russia - Orthodox Christian
- Russia and France had tension over who was the rightful protector of Isreal
- Russia wants to occupy important sea ports in the black sea to have better trading routes
- Western powers wanted to show power over the East
- Turkey regarded as the "sick man of Europe" as it was weak
- Britain wanted to maintain trading routes through the Black Sea
Consequences of the war:
- 500,000 men died
- Most costly war (between 1815-1914)
- Treaty of Paris
- March 1856
