Crimean War: March 1854 to February 1856

A brief summary of causes of the Crimean War:

• Tension rises between Russia and Turkey over the "Holy Land"
  • Russia - Orthodox Christian
• Russia and France had tension over who was the rightful protector of Isreal
• Russia wants to occupy important sea ports in the black sea to have better trading routes
• Western powers wanted to show power over the East
• Turkey regarded as the "sick man of Europe" as it was weak
• Britain wanted to maintain trading routes through the Black Sea

Consequences of the war:

• 500,000 men died
• Most costly war (between 1815-1914)
• Treaty of Paris
