Someone must've been lying about Joseph K.
CHORUS

For without having done anything wrong
LINE:
He was arrested one fine morning.
CHORUS
CUE:
8 o'clock

Failed to appear.
CHORUS

That had never happened before.
LINE:
K waiting a little longer.
CHORUS

Distinct curiosity
LINE:
Then feeling put out and hungry, he rang the bell.
CHORUS
CUE:
We're telling the truth.
LINE:
What are the talking about, K?
CHORUS

LINE:
Didn't bother me in the least.
MRS G
CUE:
It wont happen again.
LINE:
No, it wont happen again..
MRS G
CUE:
Do you really think that?
LINE:
Yes Joseph, and you mustn't take it to heart. Lots of strange things happen in this world. I must admit, since youve been so frank with me, that i listened behind the door, and these two men told me a few things. Nopt all bad. You're under arrest certainly but not for anything criminal. You're not a thief or anything. Its something special with you. Something almost learned about your arrest. Am I talking stupidly, Mr K?
MRS G
CUE:
Lets shake on it.
LINE:
Dont take it so much to heart.
MRS G
CUE:
Is Miss Burnstner in?
LINE:
No... she's at the theatre, still working... shall i give her a message?
MRS G
CUE:
Searching her room today.
LINE:
There's no need - everything's just as it was. All put back nice and tidy. You know she's often late, still, young people are like that.
MRS G
CUE:
Certainly, but it can go too far.
LINE:
How right you are. I've got nothing against her. She's a dear good kind girl - decent, punctual, full of good quantities, except...
MRS G
CUE:
Except what?
LINE:
I shouldnt say it, but ive seen her with different men twice already this month.
MRS G
CUE:
So?
LINE:
Oh please dont go, i didnt mean to offend you. You;re the only one i've spoken to. Afer all, i must keep the house respectable.
MRS G
CUE:

LINE:
upset Oh Joseph! You know I'd never give you my notice.
MRS G

LINE:
K can feel her body against his breast, and gazes at her rich dark hair. She clasps both hands round his neck and kisses the back of his head. Yes ... yes - she's biting him now, into the very hairs of his head. Hmmmm. She gives out a bitter exctining odour, like pepper. K puts his arms around her as she slides down onto the floor with a faint cry, utters....
MANAGER
CUE:
Saturday, after thebank closes.
LINE:
I feel a strong desire to help you. In your criminal case.
MANAGER
CUE:
Why dont you all leave me?
LINE:
OK, K. Since you are forced to be away, you wont mind if someone takes over your duties. After all, time is valuable.

ASST. MANAGER
CUE:

LINE:
What do you mean?
ASST. MANAGER
CUE:
Check my books.
LINE:
But K, since you are a member of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments, it seems natural that you should be his escort this morning, but if you'd rather not....
ASST. MANAGER
CUE:
Alright, I'll go.
LINE:
Don't forget your guidebook - Goodbye K.
