  • Jesus is God incarnate= God became a man.
  • Christians believe angels came down from heaven and embraced Earth.
  • The birth of Jesus would have been a Jewish festival if it wasn't for the Epiphany because eveyone was Jewish (Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the shepherdss ect.)
  • Epiphany means 'the showing'. In this context it means the showing of God to the world.
  • God responded to mans spiritual thirst which inspired him to take a human form and taking it from us.
  • They kneel and pay homage.
  • Beth-le-hem = house - of- bread. Jesus was in a manger which is a feeding trough.

Nativity events part 1.

Only in the Gospel of Luke and Matthew because in John and Mark only started to write theirs when Jesus was Baptised.

  • Mary, who is betrothed to Joseph ( a Jewish cerpenter), is told when an angel appears to her telling her she is to conceive the child of God and she would give birth to the child and call it Jesus. The Holy Spirit impregnated Mary.
  • Isiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
  • God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream and told him the child Mary had conceived was the Son of God.
  • A census was to be taken and so all families had to return to their families original towns. For Joseph it was Bethlehem. So Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem on a donkey (links to Jesus riding from Bethlehem back to Gallilie on a donkey and welcomed with psalms).
  • Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable and set him in a manger as the bread of the world (read other card to understand- Nativity Meanings).

Nativity events part 2.

  • The angels appeared to the Shepherds who were tending their flock and told them that their Savior had been born in the town of David (Bethlehem).
  • After their visit to Mary and Joseph they spread the word of the Savior being born.
  • The Magi (Wise Men(should be referred to as Magi though and we don't know exactly how many there were)) from the east saw a star and went in search knowing the star signified the birth of a new King of the Jews.
  • Herod ( the King of Judea) secretly met with the Magi and asked them to report back to him where Jesus was so he could worship him. He was really plotting to kill Jesus.
  • The Magi continued to follow the star and found Jesus and Mary in Bethlehem (most likely Jesus was two yrs old by now).
  • They worshiped him and gave him gifts of Frankincense (represents priesthood), Myrrh (Sacrifice) and Gold (represents Kingship).
  • They did not return to Herod because they were warned it would destroy the child.

Argumets FOR and AGAINST religious schools

  • Learn about the Catholic faith and other faiths.
  • Most Catholic schools are well academically archived and have good discipline.
  • Teach other subjects to the standard they teach RE.
  • Give students the choice to respect and believe in Catholicism.
  • Teach more morals.
  • Follow National curriculum.
  • Some people claim Catholic schools "brainwash" students.
  • Tax payers have to pay an amount which goes towards the religious school.
  • Catholic schools pick Catholics first before they pick any other students.
  • Out-dated.
  • students are forced to attend mass and celebrate feast days even though they may not be Catholic.
  • students who attend Catholic schools are made to take RE as a GCSE subject in place of another subject a student would have chosen.

Key: FOR and AGAINST.

The challnge from science

  • Science has proven and helped parts of the Earth.
  • Religion agrees with Science on some parts but some things can't be scientifically proven such as feelings. Love hasn't been proven as something scientific.

Is the Bible against Evolution?

  • Biblical fundamentalists say yes and argue the world has been made in 6 day and a snake (represents the devil) did talk to Adam and Eve and Evolution didn't happen.
  • Catholics do not believe this. Catholics read Genesis not as Science but a theological poem. Catholics believe in evolution and the Big Bang but also believe God is at work through evolution and the Big Bang.

Richard Dawkins (a strong atheist) - "The fact that life evolved out of nearly nothing, some 10 billion years after the universe evolved out of literally nothing, is a fact so staggering that I would be mad to attempt words to do it justice."
