Christian perspectives:
Psalm 139.13 You (God) created every part of me - you put me together in my mother's womb
Jeremiah l.4 Before I was born you (God) knew me
Exodus 20.13 You shall not murder
1 Corinthians 6.9 Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Traditionally, the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) has taken a strict view on abortion. An abortion is only allowed if the mother's life is at extreme risk - and the foetus would die anyway. In fact this is not an abortion because it is simply removing a .growth which would kill her - like a tumour. Catholics believe that the foetus has a soul from the moment of conception - and so must be protected. Focus on Sanctity of Life
The more flexible Church of England has stated that abortion is a great moral evil, and should be avoided - but it may be the lesser of two evils – eg ****, or extreme stress to the mother. They do not encourage abortion of disabled foetuses as they feel this does not value every life. Focus on Quality of Life
Other Christian churches say it is up to the individual to decide, guided by the Holy Spirit.
The key point is - are we better off with rapidly rising abortion rates and safe legal abortion, or should we make it illegal again to deter women and men frOll) using it a s a method of birth control?
