Key Words and Terms

Racism - The belief that a persons race affects their ability and their value

Prejudice - to pre-judge someone without good reason

Discrimination - to treat someone different because of a prejudice against them

Sexism - Prejudice and Discrimination based on a persons gender

Tolerance - Respecting the beliefs and practices of others

Justice - Bringing about what is fair and right according to the law or making up for a wrong that has been commited.

Ageism - Prejudice and Discrimination based on a persons age.

Scapegoating - when you blame or use a particular group as an excuse for a problem eg jews-ww2

Stereotype - A common but over simplifies idea of a particular type of person

Long term effects may be:

  • Loss of motivation
  • Restricted opportunities
  • Long term depression
  • Increased behavior problems
  • lack of education or achievemnet

The Good Samaritain

The Good Samaritain

  • A jewish man is walking down the road
  • He is beaten up and he was left half dead
  • He couldnt get up or move
  • A priest and a temple assistant just walked past
  • A samaritain helps him up adn covers his wounds
  • The good samaritain takes him to an inn and pays his fees

The key message

  • We should love our neighbour as we love ourselves, whoever they are and whatever happens to them. We should not be like the priest or the temple assistant and walk past our friends in need.

Is christianity sexist?

YES

  • The lord chose men to be the diciples of Jesus
  • 'I permit no woman to teach or have authority over men, she is to keep silent'-st.paul
  • Women are simple souls, who like simple things.- a 1968 preacher
  • Eve was created to be Adams 'helper'

NO

  • Genesis 1:27 -'God created humans in his own image...male and female he created them'
  • Galatians 3.28-'there is neither greek nor jew, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in christ
  • Jesus treated women with alot of respect

CHRISTIANITY

Christians believe that all forms of discrimination is wrong

  • God created everyone equally (new testement)
  • 'There is neither jew nor Gentile, slave or free man, male or female. We are all equal in christ (new testement)
  • 'So in everything, do unto others what you would have done to you' (New testement)
  • Jesus told us to love our neighbour (sermon on the mount)
  • In the good samaritain story the man is helped because of his need, not because of who he was or was'nt (new testement)

Religious Teachings - Buddhism

BUDDHISM

Buddhism believes that as discrimination leads to suffering then it must be wrong and should be avoided

  • The belief not to harm others or use harmful language (5 precepts)
  • Everyone should develop metta (loving kindness)
  • Everyone is equal because everyone is welcomed in the Sangha
  • Prejudice creates bad karma and has a negative effect on rebirth
  • The Dalai Lama stated that the best way to live life was to 'Always think compassion'
  • The 5 precepts- do not harm any living thing - do not take what isnt given - do not engage in sexual activity that harms others - do not speak falsly - do not put anything into your body that will cloud your mind.
  • Karma - the thought that every action has a consequence (good or bad)
  • Metta - loving kindness
  • Ahimsa - not using violence - violence is wrong whatever the reason for it
  • Sanctity of life
  • Karuna - being compassionate
