Hawthorne effect

The Hawthorne effect is a phenomenon observed as a result of an experiment conducted by Elton Mayo. In an experiment intended to measure how a work environment impacts worker productivity, Mayo's researchers noted that workers productivity increased not from changes in environment, but when being watched.

Mayo introduced the Human Relations School of thought, which focused on managers taking more of an interest in the workers, treating them as people who have worthwhile opinions and realising that workers enjoy interacting together.

Elton Mayo is considered to be the father of human relations theory. His major works are in 1933, “The Human Problems of an Industrial Civilization”, in 1945, “The Social Problems of an Industrial Civilization”, and in 1947, “The Political Problem of Industrial Civilization”.

Elton Mayo's views on the management theory grew from his Hawthorne experiments. During this experiment he observed employees' productivity levels under environmental conditions. His study drew numerous conclusions about the real source of motivation for employees.
