  • Mainly caused by sitting with incorrect posture
  • Slouching
  • Sitting awkwardly at desk

Preventions:

  • Adjustable Chair
  • Sit up straight
  • Feet on floor
  • Foot support of necessary 
  • Ensure screen is lined up and tilted appropriately

RSI

Repetitive Strain Injury

  • Aches and pains in hands, wrists, arms and neck
  • Usually symptoms do not last
  • Prevented by good workstation design and good working practices

Preventions:

  • Adjustable Chair
  • Enough Space
  • Document holder
  • Ergonomic keyboard/mouse
  • Wrist rest
  • Learn to type properly

Eye Strain

  • Causes blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Looking at screen for long periods of time
  • Glare on the screen
  • Dirt on the screen
  • Lighting

Preventions:

  • Clean
  • Appropriate Lighting
  • Blinds
  • Breaks
  • Regular eye tests
  • Don't sit too close to the screen

  • When things go wrong
  • ICT providers have a responsibility to make ICT simple to use
  • Too much to do in too little time
  • Worry about new technology 
  • Frustrating software (not designed properly)
  • Loosing work
  • Viruses
  • Technical Problems

Legislation

  • Health and Safety at Work act 1974

-Ensures safe place to work and safe system at work

  • Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment Regulations) 1922

Computer Screens

Should:-

  • Tilt and swivel
  • Be at a appropriate height for the user
  • Have a stable image with no flickering
  • Have brightness and contrast control
  • No reflections
  • Appropriate Size

User need to have training on:-

  • How to adjust brightness and contrast
  • The need to take regular breaks
  • How to adjust the size of the text and other screen elements
  • Why keeping the screen clean is important

Chairs

Should:-

  • Be adjustable in height (if person is too small provide a foot rest)
  • Have seat backs which provide support
  • Tilt
  • Five feet with castors

Desks/Work stations

Should:-

  • Be big enough for computer equipment and paperwork
  • Have a matt surface (reduces glare)

Less stressful software

  • Bug free
  • Carefully chosen fonts and font size
  • Info in an logical order
  • Important items at top left
  • Behave in a way that user's expect
  • Help screens/desk
  • Not a lot to key in
  • Music/animations can be switched off/skipped 
  • Short cuts to minimise mouse clicks
  • Training
  • Log all problems

Software design to prevent stress

  • Logical order (Important first)
  • Tested to prevent crashes
  • Tested for frustrating problems
  • Minimise mouse movements
  • Consistency 
  • Items like buttons, menu etc where users would expect them
  • Simply written help screen and tested by novice users
