Economic Problems + Reparations

Solution:

To get France, America and Britain to accept lower reparation payments

Solution Success:

  • Dawes Plan (1924) - Germany agreed to pay as much as they could each year

      USA gave Germany a loan of 800 million marks to start

  • Locarno Treaties (1925) - was like a peace treaty and improved Germany's reputation and foreign banks were willing to lend money to German businesses → new facilities

The Locarno Pact

1925 - Germany signed the pact with Britain, France, Italy and Belgium.

This pact marked Germany's return to the European international scene and began a period of cooperation between Britain, France and Belgium.

Germany needed to improve relations with other countries by:

- Reducing worst features

- Restoring international prestige

Kept existing borders between Germany, Belgium and France.

The Kellogg - Briand Pact

1928 - Germany signed pact with 68 other nations.

Improved relations with Germany and European Nations.

Pact agreed that:

- They would keep their army for self defence

- All international disputes will be solved peacefully

League of Nations

League of Nations - an international organisation designed to keep peace

1920 - Germany became part of the League of Naions because then the Locarno Pact can happen

Stresemann used Germany's position in the League of Nations to bring about the Young Plan

September 1926 - Germany  given a permanent seat in the league of nations → great power status
