Weimar Republic

The name given to Germany after the Kaiser had abducted in November 1918.

January 1919 - Spartacist Uprising

It is led by Karl Lieknecht and Rosa Luxemburg attempted to take over Berlin and they were communists. Tried to over important buildings like the newspaper HQ and the workers went on strike. Ebert, calls on the freicorps (army) to bring the uprising down. The two leaders are found dead in the river.

Treaty of Versailles - June 1919

L and - Rhineland is now a non military zone. Ruhr is taken away from them. Alsace - Lorraine is given back to France.

 A rmy - 100,000 men only allowed and any military equipment such as tanks are not aloud.

Money - Had to pay 6.6 billion in reparations.

B lame - Had to take full blame for WW.

People who signed this were known as November Criminals by the Germany people.

Kapp Putsch - March 1920

Frei Corps decide to Rebel - wanted to inforce a right wing goverment. 

Marched into Berlin to take over.

Run by Wolfgang Kapp 

Try to overthrow the Weimar Regime, however Ebert calls a strike so this cannot happen.

French Occupation Of The Ruhr - 1923

French invade because Germany were behind on the reparation payments from the Treaty of Versailles. If they can't pay they will take it away so they can still make their money. The French then go into the Ruhr and take over their factories so they can earn some money from the produce

Hyperinflation - 1923

Due to the invasion of the Ruhr, the German government order the people to go on strike. In order to make sure the German people go on strike and get paid, they begin to print more money. if you print more money, it means money becomes worth less due to everyone having more money. In 1918, an egg cost a quarter of a mark. By November 1923, it cost 80 million marks. Due to hyperinflation, no one wanted to trade with Germany so food supplies were at a all time low.

Gustav Stresemann - 1923 - 1929

Becomes Chancellor of the Weimar Republic in 1923 and helped Germany to recover. The years he was in power were known as "the Golden Years" some reason for this?
