EPPE

  • conducted in UK by Sylva et al
  • used children aged 3-11, 3000 were involved, a control group of children was used. the study included a large range of cultural backgrounds
  • high population validity as a range of cultures and large sample size were used
  • longitudinal study so it could suffer from attrition causing the results to be underestimated
  • found that high quality day care effected the children by giving them better social ability, concentration and independence
  • it improved a childs social, intellectual and behavioural development
  • the earlier a child started day care the bigger the improvement it had on their intellectual development
  • this suggests that day care is good

NICHD

  • more time a child spends in day care the more adults rate them as aggessive, disobidient and assertive
  • children who attended day care full time were 3 times more likely to argue, have a temper tantrum, lie and hit others
  • only a correlation so it doesn't tell us that day care causes aggressio, it just shows that the two are linked

Clarke

  • different results found to Belsky as she found that children who attended day care advanced in social development. they were more independent, behaved at the dinner table, complied with requests and had better interaction with friends
  • this shows that children can respond to day care in different ways
  • we don't know exactly why day care effects social development

Field

  • shown to increase a number of friends an child has, showing a postive link between day care and social ability
