Personality

The patterns or thoughts and feelings and the way in which we interact with our environment and other people that makes us a unique person.

This can be linked to sport as someone may show attitude towards a sport or an athlete also how an individual may react to a situation e.g a person is fouled and they react aggressively.

Trait Theory

The trait theory is the theory that you are born with your personality which is passed doqn from your parents. The traits are general(Covering all situations), underlying(inside of and part of the person), predisposition(an inclination formed earlier) and enduring(long lasting)

Formula:

Behaviour=Function of personality

Depending on what situation you're in depends on how you act and what you show.

Girdano's narrow band theory:

Type A: Impatience, works at a rapid pace, higher levels of stress, easily aroused, strong desire to succeed, lacking in tolerance.

Type B:Relaxed and Patient, allow time for tasks to be completed, tolerance of others' mistakes, delegates easily, low personal stress, less competitive.

Social Learning Theory

The social learning theory says that we act and behave by observing from the environment around us. We learn how to act or behave by observing friends, role models and everything else that we believe would be rewarding. For example, a child is likely to copy their favorite footballers if that footballer is successful.

Three main stages of Social learning theory:                                                                                    1.Modeling                                                                                                                                        2.Reinforcement                                                                                                                                3.Motivation

Formula:                                                                                                                                            Behaviour=Function of Environment                                                                                                Behaviour is based on the environemnt an individual is in. Behaviour is fully dependant on the environment that you are brought up in. It means whatever you see other people do, you are more likely to follow them.

Social Learning Theory:Boba doll

Bobo Doll experiment:                                                                                                                      An experiment by Bandura(1961) in which adults modelled aggressive towards a "Boba doll". The children observed the adults and then copied the adults with being aggressive towards the "Boba doll". This supports Bandura's Social learning theory which suggests people learn by observations, modelling, limitation, punishment and reward.

Interactional Theory

Hollander's Model

This theory suggests that every individual has a psychological core at the centre of their personality. This core links to the trait theory because our traits are innate and enduring. However, our behaviour can change according to differebt situations. The typical responses are the waya person is expected to behave, for example, an individual who has a calm demeanour is expceted to be calm in most situations. The next layer is role related behaviour. Within this layer individuals will act differently depending on the role that they are playing. For example, the captain of a football team might be supportive and professional on the field but be extremely carefree whilst socialising with family and Friends.

Formula:                                                                                                                                                Behaviour=Function of Personality x Environment                                                                               A person's behaviour according to this formula is based on the function of this personality and how they are as a person and the environment that surrounds them and what they have been brought up to react to certain situations.
