Psychology unit 4 media revision
Social psychological explanations of attraction of celebrity
Mere exposure effect
Description
This states that we are attracted to celebrities because we hear about them on a
regular basis. The more you hear about then the more you are attracted to them.
Evaluation
Zajonc found that the more participants saw Chinese symbols, yearbook photos
and nonsense trigrams the more they would associate them with positive emotions.
This shows that when we are repeatedly exposed to something we come to think
more positively about it.
In reality we are not attracted to every celebrity we see on a regular basis-
some celebrities appear frequently but don't appear attractive to people
suggesting other factors are involved.
